MAYA LIN
|ARCHITECT|ARTIST|
I found Maya Lin's vision for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial very inspiring and mature, especially since she was 21 at that time. Although simple at first glance, her design was meaningful and I felt that she displayed utmost respect and sensitivity towards the Vietnam War veterans in her design.
I liked how she created a symbolic experience for visitors through subtle ways. An example of that was her decision to use reflective material for the wall engraved with all the names of the veterans, hence, when visitors gaze upon the wall, their reflection could be seen simultaneously with the names. The reflection upon the names was meant to symbolically link the past and present together.

I also admired the spirit and attitude Lin had in standing by her design which was unconventional then. She defended her design eloquently regardless of the backlash and criticism she received from the public. I thought her attitude in handling harsh critique was commendable and professional.
