NAOTO FUKASAWA
|PRODUCT DESIGNER|
Naoto Fukasawa’s designs are derived from his observation of people's behaviour, thoughts and feelings. He often takes notice of gestures and things which are commonly overlooked, hence, his design philosophy is 'Without Thought'.
His design for a cell phone is inspired by the blunt edges of a peeled potato. His rationale behind the form of the phone is derived from the attachment people have with their phones. By shaping the phone with edges instead of the usual aerodynamic form of a phone, users can feel the textures of the edges while fiddling with their phone.
I felt that his design brings together familiar memories and design. When users engage with his works, a certain memory is triggered, thus, making the interaction more significant and relatable than before. I thought there is subtlety and familiarity in the nature of Fukasawa's designs which appeals to the senses of the users.
