MARIJE VOGELZANG
|EATING DESIGNER|
Marije Vogelzang has a very unique outlook in design. The idea of influencing people's behaviour while eating was evocative. I thought Vogelzang's way of doing so were unconventional and clever.
I particularly liked her take on people gathering to share a traditional Christmas meal. She designed the sides of the tablecloth to be pulled up at the sides and insert slits for the guests' arms and heads. This simple set up helped to create an equal standing among the guests as it no longer matter what they wore. The dinner also became more intimate due to the confined space.

Another example of her work which I felt was brilliant is serving food on half plates to encourage interaction and sharing with other guests.
Initially, I did not know what the term 'eating design' was but I became intrigued by how Vogelzang built the eating experience around various aspects such as the senses, culture, society and psychology. However, after having seen her work, I feel that such aspects can be incorporated into other fields of design to enhance the user experience as well.
